Ichthux Ideas

This page is aimed to gathering new ideas to be added to Ichthux

Programs

Biblestudy - uses the Sword libraries, and also has space for additional guided bible study materials. Can be found at http://www.whensdinner.com/xoops/html/modules/mydownloads/singlefile.php?cid=1&lid=4

Libraries

- see if it possible to have a dialog at sword install (work with pkg_crosswire on alioth) to choose default 'system-wide' modules installed in /usr/share/sword. Then use preseeding in ichthux to install default modules with sword, depending on the selected profile.
- a graphical christian librairies package (free christian clipart)
- a christian music package (why not a christian project close to the Mutopia project, that would release free pdf music sheets?)
- a community organizer program (don't remember the name of it, but there is one open-source existing, if someone can find it again...)
- openoffice layouts for church needs package?
- KEduca tests to learn hebrew and greek
- audio bibles packages

Features

- HOSTS file that blocks unwanted anti-Christian sites (Porn, violence, junk food... )
- BOOTSPLASH graphics! Let us pay special attention to making the framebuffer, the KDM background and the inital KDE desktop wallpaper the SAME. It will feel *much* faster.

BibleStudy? is yet another Windows program... Why include a Windows Sword frontend, when BibleTime contains a fully integrated one?
Just as for OpenSong? : aren't there linux programs that do the same thing? I'm not totally against including a few win programs, but I'll just remind something : Wine is not an emulator (this is actally the meaning of its name) and thus doesn't run win apps perfectly, unless you have win32 libraries on your hard drive, which is not our goal. It is much better imo to focus on linux apps when building a linux distro, all the more that the win apps will not be included in packages but would have to be added as 'floating' .exe documents. Building a whole christian distro might furthermore get the christian developers to port their programs to linux so they can be included.
There is no (not yet?) debian official packages for kio-sword and asaph :(

The BibleStudy? program is NOT a Windows program per se. It uses wxPython, and can be run on Linux as well as Windows. Thus, I feel it certainly could be a useful addition to our project.

I have been looking around for many months now for "best of breed" software to perform the same function that OpenSong? provides, and it seems to be the best out there. The CLOSEST thing I could find that was not specifically a Windows program was Asaph, which is why I put it's recommendation first.

I know that WINE is not the end-all solution for Win apps on Linux... but it can be useful for getting some apps to work, which is all I was advocating. If we decided to include the WINE API then we have access to a larger base of apps that we can work with. It's the same concept as the KDE libraries: since they are already included to get kdebase running, they can also be used to get other non-base programs running (K3B is a prime example).

As far as I know, there are NOT Debian packages that pre-exist for Kio-Sword or for Asaph. That is why WE, the developers of IchthuX, can package them if we decide we want these packages in our distro.

Made a few researches and found kio-sword for Debian on 'deb http://openix1.free.fr/ Debian/'

Make IchthuX a CDD (Custom Debian Distribution) described here: http://wiki.debian.net/index.cgi?CustomDebian

The closer to core Debian we make our changes, the less customizing work we'll do. Also, core Debian support is easily attainable so long as everything you include is DFSG compatible. I don't see any barriers to IchthuX becoming a CDD, and then being mastered directly from Debian instead of having to tailor Knoppix (thereby making it a derivative of a derivative: not an ideal situation for user support).

How about adding an admin control panel (something like Libranet uses) where users could manage their systems?
As an existing Libranet user (v.2.8.1) I find the Adminmenu a very useful tool and is one of the reasons why I still use Libranet.
I am sure users would find such a tool much better than trying to remember cli commands.

I have some photos from Israel that I took that perhaps could be useful for wallpaper -- if yes I could put smaller versions on my website for viewing.
